What is a pathologist?
A pathologist is a specialist medical doctor who diagnoses through analysis of samples in the laboratory. They work in tandem with doctors who see patients, to determine the most appropriate management plan for a patient.
Histopathologist are also trained to perform autopsies (to determine the cause of death).

Does a pathologist see patients?
Pathologists don't directly see patients but are laboratory based.
How are patients billed?
Either directly if they are non-medical aid patients or via their medical aid if with a medical aid. In the case of non-payment by a medical aid then the patient is liable for payment.
Do patients always require a referral from their doctor for pathology testing?
Usually, for patients on medical aid, it is a requirement in order for the account to be settled by a medical aid.
Private patients may request tests directly but must provide doctor details to whom the results may go to. Test results must be managed by a trained person, i.e., a healthcare professional.
